Which area has the most care options for dementia or specialist needs?
Chiang Mai has the widest choice of expat-friendly retirement homes, according to a September 2026 guide from Thailand Starter Kit, and several advertise dementia care. That does not make it right for everyone: whether a particular person can be cared for safely depends on their needs, their doctors’ advice and each provider’s own assessment.
Where is hospital access best?
Bangkok has Thailand’s largest cluster of JCI-accredited hospitals, including Bumrungrad International, BNH and Samitivej, and the widest specialist access. Each of the six areas has at least one JCI-accredited hospital, such as Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, Chiangmai Ram and Overbrook in Chiang Rai. How far a particular home is from a suitable hospital still needs checking case by case.
Which area is the most affordable?
Living costs are generally lowest in Chiang Rai, followed by Chiang Mai, and highest in Bangkok and Phuket. Care prices depend on the provider and the level of support more than on the area, so compare written quotes. Chiang Rai also has fewer care options, which matters if needs may grow.
How do I choose the right area?
Start with what matters most: health needs and hospital access, climate, budget, the kind of community you want, and how easily family can visit. Then visit, or take a short stay where providers offer one, before committing. We can talk the options through with you and tell you where we can and cannot currently help.
Which areas suit a coastal lifestyle?
Hua Hin offers a calmer seaside town about three hours from Bangkok, Pattaya offers big-city amenities close to Bangkok’s main airport, and Phuket offers island living with seasonal direct flights from London and generally higher costs.
